The case is all wet
Water bills tend to skyrocket in summer, but could one home use $74,000 worth of water in one month? In Mascoutah, Ill., resident Rose Mary Cook asked that question when she was charged $29,787 for 10 million gallons of water, $43,581 for sewer, plus $893 for municipal tax in June.
Cook took her bill to City Hall where it was recalculated to $32.66 and then waived. City officials determined that a broken meter caused the spike in her water bill. “My daughter asked me if I was hoarding water during the drought,” Cook told The Associated Press. “I told her I would but I don’t know where I would find 10 million gallon jugs.”
Hoppy to see you
“I swear I’m not drunk or on drugs, but I just saw a kangaroo,” is a line that Clyde Armstead, a West Virginia conservation officer has heard too often lately. According to The Associated Press, a kangaroo has been roaming around backyards and on rural roads near Charleston. The first sighting occurred one week after Christmas when police received a call from someone saying the animal was in their yard. “The dispatcher thought someone was celebrating New Year’s early,” Armstead told the AP. Attempts to capture the critter have been unsuccessful.
