A seedy town
Constantine, Mich., finally has a claim to fame. In December, the Michigan Senate declared the village with 2,000 residents as the Seed Corn Capital of the World. According to The Detroit News, seed corn is the corn grown specifically for seed for next year’s crop, and as much as 20 percent of the seed corn produced in the country is grown within a 30-mile radius of Constantine. “It’s not a very glamorous thing,” Village Council President Patricia Weiss told the newspaper. “But what else do we have to hang our hat on?”
Just give ’em 11, why don’t ya?
Greenville County, S.C., has an ordinance that sets aside a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 15, but it is the only county in the state that does not provide employees a paid holiday to recognize the civil rights leader. That might not be true for long if a series of television ads sponsored by a group of media businesses is successful in convincing the County Council to adopt the holiday. According to The Associated Press, seven of the 12 council members voted in April to make the third Monday in January a holiday if county employees chose to give up one of their 10 current holidays. County employees voted to keep the old calendar.
