St. Louis appears to be headed for a battle with the federal Justice Department. According to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the city has rejected an “out-of-court offer from the federal government that would have promoted eight black firefighters and paid other black firefighters thousands of dollars in damages for not getting a higher-ranking job because of their race,” the article says. The offer was made after the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) concluded that a promotions test used by the fire department in late 2000 were biased against minorities. The city stands by the test. EEOC can now turn the case over to the Justice Department. For more information, visit
