Massachusetts’ attorney general is filing a lawsuit alleging that seven companies involved in the design and construction of a Big Dig tunnel in Boston were grossly negligent, causing part of the tunnel’s ceiling to collapse and kill a passing motorist in July. Attorney General Thomas Reilly’s lawsuit names Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff, Modern Continental Construction and others, saying the ceiling’s design, in which 4,500-pound ceiling panels were held in place with bolts sealed with epoxy, was flawed, according to The Boston Globe. A special grand jury is still investigating whether criminal charges will be made against companies and individuals involved with the $14.6 billion Big Dig project.
