Sujit CanagaRetna, former fiscal policy manager at the Council of State Governments? Southern Office, the Southern Legislative Conference
CanagaRetna predicts considerable uncertainty surrounding federal policymaking with the new Trump Administration and the new Congress. He sees multiple unknowns involving tax, spending and regulatory policy changes at the federal level in 2017, and he’s uncertain how those unknowns will impact the national, and by extension, the state economies.
“For the first time since the Great Recession, an increasing number of states are facing significant budget challenges,” CanagaRetna explains. He says that some of the state budget problems can be traced to the following: revenue shortfalls as a result of drooping income tax growth, even slower sales tax growth and an actual drop in corporate taxes.
