Revitalizing roadways – Duluth, Ga.
Duluth, Ga., is working to revitalize downtown by improving its roadways.
Three projects, budgeted for $3.5 million, aim to help traffic and pedestrians intermingle safely in the downtown area. The first project will improve sidewalks, parking and drainage downtown. Once complete, two more projects will begin simultaneously to improve landscaping, lighting, roadways and signalization.
?We want to make sure that the people who come to downtown Duluth have a safe, easy, accessible route whether it?s by walking, by car or whatever means they come down ? that they know they are in a safe environment, that they know where they are going, and it?s aesthetically pleasing,? says Nick Colonna, community development director for Duluth.
These improvements aren?t the end of Duluth?s transformation. These initial projects, Colonna says, will begin the modernization of downtown Duluth while reducing the conflict between pedestrians and other traffic. ?What this does is set that stage. We can say ?hey, we did this right? and we can think about future improvements,? he says. ?These [projects] will set that new standard.?
