Los Angeles County 1
Sustainable pavement project
The 2012 California Statewide Needs Assessment report estimated that approximately $8 billion is needed annually over the next 10 years to bring Los Angeles County streets and roads to sustainable levels.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works program focuses on three approaches to maintaining roads: first, take care of the roads that are in good condition; second, use recycled materials in treatment selections; third, reutilize existing materials-in-place.
The three-pronged sustainable pavement program resulted in significant reductions in energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as well as substantial cost savings. Compared to hot mix alternatives, sustainable pavement treatments have reduced energy consumption and GHG emissions by approximately 80 percent, resulting in approximately 50 million pounds of CO2 equivalent removed from the environment. In addition, since implementing the program in 2009, approximately $12.8 million has been saved utilizing these sustainable practices.
