Best bike lane – San Francisco
People For Bikes, a cycling advocacy group, recently voted the Polk Street Bike Lane in San Francisco the best bike lane in America. Running counter-to and separated-from the flow of traffic, the Polk Street Bike Lane is helping to improve and better connect the city?s cycling infrastructure. ?By constantly improving the experience for people biking, we can move towards a San Francisco where even more people see riding a bike as not just a fun activity but a very practical way to get around,? says Ben Jose, a public relations officer for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.
Jose says the $2.5 million project, which was completed in May 2014, wasn?t simply the installation of a bike lane. The city took the opportunity to improve the entire corridor: repaving, landscaping, draining renovations and adding parking. In the future, the city may choose to extend the bike lane further down Polk Street.
