10 best cities for senior health

  • Written by Michelle M. Havich
  • 29th July 2021

According to the CDC, there were more than 53 million Americans over the age of 65 in 2019, making up about 16 percent of the total population. By 2060, this number is projected to increase to 23 percent of the total population.

The Mesothelioma Center has put together a list of the best 10 cities for senior health in the United States. “For mesothelioma patients, a healthy lifestyle is an important component of improving one’s life span and quality of life,” the report says, and a key factor in that is geographic location. The center analyzed data from 100 metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas with high populations of seniors, then looked at the following metrics for each city, and rated each on a weighted scale:

  • Ratio of seniors to the total population (10 points)
  • Average retirement income (10 points)
  • Average life expectancy (15 points)
  • Percentage of seniors in poverty (10 points)
  • Percentage of seniors enrolled in Medicare (15 points)
  • Number of senior living centers per capita (20 points)
  • Number of cancer doctors per capita (20 points)

Click through the gallery above to see which U.S. cities were found to be the best for senior health.

Don’t be deceived by its name: the Inflation Reduction Act represents the most significant act combating climate change Congress has ever passed. • Here are 12 of America's most walkable cities with vacancies for renters
Of the many factors that entice visitors and new community members to a city, its walkability is pretty high on the list. Inviting sidewalk and smart traffic control drives foot traffic to restaurants and storefronts, making the area desirable for prospective businesses, which in turn attracts more people.  It’s a loop that begins with the […]
