App enables passengers to keep tabs on bus location

Olean, N.Y., has partnered with Passio Technologies to install an automated vehicle-tracking platform on the Olean Area Transit System.

Olean, N.Y., has partnered with Passio Technologies to install an automated vehicle-tracking platform on Olean Area Transit System (OATS). With SmartTraxx, passengers can track the location of their bus in real time from their mobile devices.

Using the platform, smartphone users can view one or multiple routes and check specific stop locations, find the closest bus stop to their location and track estimated time of arrival at bus stops. The status of OATS’ bus routes and vehicle locations refreshes in real time and can be viewed from any device connected to the Internet. OATS operates buses over five routes and carries more than 78,000 passengers per year.

“Passengers should not have to guess when the next bus will arrive,” Olean’s mayor, Bill Aiello, says. “With the platform, riders can view the system map and see the location and estimated arrival time of their bus. This platform will make riding public transportation in Olean that much more enjoyable, and we believe it will ultimately increase ridership.”

OATS operates buses over five routes and carries more than 78,000 passengers per year. The system provides service from Olean to the village of Cuba, the St. Bonaventure University campus, Salamanca, and the Oil Spring and Allegany Territories of the Seneca Nation.

In addition, OATS is launching the BusBuzz platform within the SmartTraxx app.BusBuzz allows passengers to provide instant feedback on drivers, vehicles, schedules and service directly from the SmartTraxx app. Management receives this information via email and can respond directly to riders’ feedback — both positive and negative — and track trends in real time.

“Passengers today want to be able to see the precise location of their bus, and they want to be able to provide their feedback in real-time,” says Mitch Skyer, president of Atlanta-based Passio. “Technology should be used in a way that makes taking public transportation simple. These new solutions will open up a new level of transparency for OATS passengers.”

SmartTraxx integrates fully with the company’s IncroMAXX platform. The platform provides a single management solution that integrates the technology passengers demand and operators require. The project was completed in September 2016.
