NASCIO endorses National Cyber Security Awareness Month
The Lexington, Ky.-based National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) is encouraging its members to recognize October 2010 as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. The month is dedicated to protecting citizen data and raising awareness of security threats.
Organized by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a consortium of government agencies and private industry sponsors, National Cyber Security Awareness Month is designed to increase the public’s awareness of cyber security and crime issues, so that computer users can take precautions to avoid those threats on the Internet, according to NASCIO. “Our national surveys and priority rankings consistently put security awareness and education in the top five among critical issues,” said Stephen Fletcher, NASCIO president and Utah’s state CIO. “The numerous activities states undertake during October bring needed attention to cyber security concerns and threats for citizens, state employees, and policy makers.”
Public relations activities, educational programs, events and initiatives that target home users, small businesses, education audiences (K-12 and higher education), and child safety online will be featured throughout October on NASCIO’s Cyber Security Awareness resource page. Also, learn about participating in National Cyber Security Awareness Month and about NCSA’s “Top 8 Cyber Security Practices.”
