The Denver-based National Civic League (NCL) has announced the finalists for the 2010 All-America City Awards. The finalists implemented programs aimed at diversifying the local labor force, providing affordable housing options and funding basic services during the recession, increasing the tax base to fund schools and more.
Listed alphabetically by state, the 2010 All-America City finalists are: Chandler, Ariz.; Bentonville, Ark.; Dublin, Calif.; Lynwood, Calif.; Rancho Cordova, Calif.; the Vernon Central neighborhood in Los Angeles; Miami Lakes, Fla.; North Miami. Fla.; Acworth, Ga; Belleville, Ill.; Canton, Ill.; Noblesville, Ind.; Des Moines, Iowa; Lenexa, Kan.; Scott County, Kan.; Bowling Green, Ky.; Salisbury, Md.; Ferguson, Mo.; Riverside, Mo.; Lynbrook, N.Y.; Gastonia, N.C.; West Chester, Ohio; Wyoming, Ohio; Mount Pleasant, S.C.; El Paso, Texas; Abingdon, Va.; and Middleton, Wis.
To become a finalist, each participant completed an application documenting three community projects that address their communities’ most pressing challenges. Each community will send a delegation to Kansas City to give presentations on their projects to a jury of civic experts, who will then pick the 10 All-America Cities that will be announced on June 18. “These are some of the most innovative communities in the country,” said NCL President Gloria Rubio-Cortes in a statement. “They give us hope and inspiration and teach us important lessons about leveraging the civic energy of ordinary people to address difficult challenges during some very tough economic times.”
More than 500 communities from around the country have earned the All-America City title. Learn more about the award program and follow events leading up to the Kansas City event.
