‘Live free or die’ state legalizes same-sex marriage
Love is in the air for same-sex couples now that New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch has signed into law legislation that sanctions gay marriage. However, Lynch said in a statement that residents with religious beliefs against same-sex marriage have nothing to fear from the new law.
The new legislation comes two years after the state passed its civil unions law, which extended to homosexual couples the same legal rights enjoyed by heterosexual couples. “While civil unions were recognized as a step forward, many same-sex couples made compelling arguments that a separate system is not an equal system,” Lynch said in a statement. Lynch pointed out that the same law also protects religions that do not recognize same-sex marriage from participating in nuptial activities that violate their beliefs.
