Harnessing rays in the Sunshine State

Powering all of the meeting rooms, exhibit spaces and auditoriums in the 7 million-square-foot Orange County, Fla., Convention Center just got a little greener. Last month, the facility completed the installation of a 1.1-megawatt rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system, which occupies approximately 200,000 square feet of roof space. Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls developed and managed the project, which also includes four 10-kilowatt PV systems for testing a variety of PV modules and racking types. The system is expected to supply 10 percent of the total facility’s energy usage each year and reduce the facility’s carbon emissions by 1.8 million pounds per year.
