Town turns buses into emergency vehicles
After Hurricane Andrew devastated much of south Florida in 1992, flooding prevented many emergency crews from reaching hard-hit areas immediately. Not to be stopped by floods again, Cutler Bay has purchased five surplus school buses from the Miami-Dade School District and outfitted them as first-responder vehicles. The buses were repainted, stocked with generators and emergency supplies and retrofitted to run on biofuel. The buses’ extra-high platforms will help them reach low-lying, flood-prone areas that may become inaccessible to traditional emergency vehicles, such as four-wheel-drive pickup trucks.
