Miami teams with Microsoft to create seniors
Miami’s senior residents now have access to computer training and equipment as part of the city’s eSeniors program. In cooperation with Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, the city has opened two “learning hubs” at community senior centers and plans to expand the program to 10 senior centers.
Part of the city’s Elevate Miami program, eSeniors will provide free training with specialized Microsoft software. Participating seniors receive financial assistance to purchase technology packages that include software to help manage medication or improve memory and cognitive skills. The computer hardware includes large-key keyboards and track ball mouse attachments for seniors with vision and dexterity impairments.
“[The eSeniors program empowers seniors] to improve their quality of life, simplify many everyday tasks, access community and government services more easily, and participate fully in our increasingly digital society,” Miami Mayor Manny Diaz said in a statement. Elevate Miami is a series of public-private partnerships that provide the city’s residents with affordable technology.
