California has enacted Senate Bill 271, giving district attorneys and prosecuting city attorneys the power to seek money damages from gangs for illegal activities, such as vandalism. Written by state Sen. Gilbert Cedillo and sponsored by Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Bill 271 will take effect in January 2008. The legislation allows prosecutors to collect fines from gang members and, if necessary, seize personal assets.
