Air Force Is Top Green Power Purchaser Among Public Entities
Overall, the Air Force is fifth on the list, which ranks the top 25 green power purchasers in the agency’s Green Power Partnership. The Green Power Partnership encourages private and public organizations to use renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro in lieu of conventional electricity.
Among the other public entities on EPA’s Top Green Power Purchasers list, EPA ranks seventh, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County rank ninth, the Department of Energy ranks 12th and the Department of Veterans Affairs ranks 23rd.
According to EPA, food and beverage giant PepsiCo is first on the list of the Top Green Power Purchasers. PepsiCo – which was founded in 1965 through the merger of Pepsi-Cola and Frito-Lay – purchases 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours of green power per year, according to EPA.
EPA estimates that the 25 organizations on the Top Green Power Purchasers list have reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 700,000 vehicles.
