NACo launches County Climate Protection Program
The Washington-based National Association of Counties (NACo) has created a County Climate Protection Program to help counties nationwide with climate protection initiatives. The program will kickoff with a climate change forum for county leaders in Washington on Sept. 20 and 21.
Climate protection initiatives can include efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transportation projects, energy conservation and land use policies that reduce the number of vehicles on the road. The new program will offer tools to facilitate those programs, such as a template for setting a numerical target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “NACo believes the program will provide counties at any stage in addressing climate protection an opportunity to learn how they can play an active role, implement strategies, evaluate results and determine realistic adjustments for future targets,” said NACo President and Blue Earth County, Minn., Commissioner Colleen Landkamer in a statement.
The Climate Protection Program is part of NACo’s Green Government Initiative. For information on the program and on attending the forum, contact Kelly Zonderwyk at [email protected], (202) 942-4224, or go to www.naco.org/climateprotection.
