Before the new year begins, historic Settler’s Hill Landfill in Geneva, Ill., will begin its transformation from dump to recreational center. The 150-foot summit of the landfill, which began service in the mid-1900s, could become the location of a “celestial observatory” planned by Kane County, according to the Chicago Tribune. There are other recreational plans for the former landfill, but Geneva residents say they are just glad to be rid of the smell and truck traffic Settler’s Hill had brought to their community.
