Cities across the nation are dealing with an unusual side effect of growth — an overabundance of churches. Protected by a federal law that allows them to overcome zoning restrictions, churches can multiply rapidly in one area, causing traffic jams and, since they are tax-exempt, add little money to local budgets, according to The Christian Science Monitor. Church leaders say they are simply meeting a growing need, and some of them are paying impact fees and taxes on profit-generating enterprises.
