The Los Angeles Fire Department has its first African American chief, though he is currently just the acting chief. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa named veteran firefighter Douglas Barry to take over for Fire Chief William Bamattre, who resigned last week, according to the Los Angeles Times. The department has been under fire lately for accusations of racial discrimination, and Barry is expected to make changes to alleviate those problems.
