Atlanta officials are asking the Environmental Protection Agency for more time to finish part of a $3.9 billion sewer overflow tunnel that is part of a settlement to a lawsuit filed by an environmental group. The consent decree that ended a 1998 lawsuit filed by the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper required that the work on the West Area Combined Sewer Overflow Storage Tunnel be completed by Nov. 7, 2007, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Atlanta’s commissioner of watershed management says a broken drill bit and other unexpected complications have delayed completion of the project.
