Washington’s Metro transit system is planning to cut costs of escalator maintenance by cutting out some of its escalators. The Metro has more escalators than most subway systems, but now it plans to replace 23 troubled escalators in 15 stations with stairs, according to the Washington Post. The escalators will be removed only where at least two other escalators will remain as an option to stairs.
