Fowl play
In July, Elizabeth City, N.C., residents welcomed quieter mornings following an ordinance change that prohibits anyone from keeping crowing roosters or other noisy fowl within the city limits. Although other North Carolina cities can fine owners for similar offenses, Elizabeth City’s regulations refer to “fowl running at large during the day or being in public places at night,” according to The Daily Advance. City Manager Rich Olson spearheaded the ordinance changes, which would prohibit owners from having “any rooster, duck, goose or other such bird or fowl that by loud and habitual crowing, quacking or honking in any other manner constitutes a public nuisance.”
Going once, going twice, sold
To raise $1.8 million, officials in King Cove, Alaska, are selling an old school using the online auction site eBay. Officials in the Aleutians East Borough put the school on the auction block, hoping its waterfront location — with access to plentiful marine life, including halibut, salmon and crab — will attract potential buyers, according to Reuters. With a starting bid of $400,000, the school has received some interest, garnering 500 hits and several phone inquiries.
