East Millinocket, Maine, is considering banning outdoor wood-fired boilers that already have been prohibited in New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York and are opposed by the American Lung Association. A city councilman is proposing the ban in response to complaints from some residents with a wood-burning boiler in their neighborhood that they say has filled their homes with an odor of smoke, according to the Bangor Daily News. However, the co-owner of locally based Clean Woods Heat plans to ask for an exemption for his company’s boiler, which he says produces much less pollution.
