A strike by more than 1,500 Los Angeles city employees failed to cause the massive disruptions the workers’ union had predicted. Members of the Engineers and Architects Association, who are mostly technical professionals like accountants and forensic scientists, picketed outside city offices or stayed home from work to protest what they call inadequate wage increases proposed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, according to the Los Angeles Times. The strike caused some delays at the city’s harbor and on work on a runway at LAX, but otherwise had little effect on city services.
