Officials in Clackamas County, Ore., are considering a ballot proposal that could put an end to the county’s “catch and release criminal justice system.” Faced with overcrowding at its jail and staff shortages, the county has released thousands of inmates charged with crimes like car theft and drug possession to make room for more dangerous inmates, according to The Oregonian. The ballot proposal would allow the county to spend $43 million over five years to increase the number of deputies at the jail where only 350 of its 434 beds are being used.
