The number of people killed in the early August heat wave in New York may be much higher than city officials have announced. Unlike many other cities, New York only counts confirmed victims of heat stroke as being victims of the heat, so the official toll from the Aug. 1 to Aug. 4 heat wave is 31, according to The New York Times. Many cities, like Chicago, count deaths from heart failure that may have been caused by the heat.
