Work continues at the Chef Menteur landfill in eastern New Orleans despite a cease-and-desist order from the city. Mayor Ray Nagin issued the order to close the landfill, which he authorized following Hurricane Katrina, saying that the city wants to make sure it is operating in accordance with city laws, according to the Times-Picayune. The owner of the landfill, Houston-based Waste Management, says it is following the law and has filed a request in federal court for authority to remain open until the debris from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita is gone.
