Power back on in Queens, off again in California
Power is gradually being restored to Queens and parts of New York that have been in the dark for a week, but some officials want to declare a state of emergency. Meanwhile, a failure in Los Angeles’ power grid, overworked by a severe heat wave, left 175,000 homes and businesses without electricity, and more problems are expected as the hot weather continues. Consolidated Edison officials still do not know why 10 major “feeder cables” failed, causing the New York blackout, and some officials want the head of the power company to resign, according to the New York Times. In parts of the Los Angeles area, the highs have topped 100 degrees for 18 days now, and officials with Edison International say the record usage is overloading transformers, according to the Los Angeles Times.
