The chairman of Colorado’s Public Utilities Commission is defending his habit of attending numerous out-of-state conferences funded by utility industries. Commissioner Gregory Sopkin has gone to more than 30 of the conferences, many at expensive resort hotels, in the three and a half years since becoming chairman of the commission, according to the Denver Post, a fact that has drawn criticism from consumer advocates. Sopkin says speaking at the conferences keeps him up to date on issues, and Colorado law does not restrict him from attending the conferences.
