The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) is revising a permit allowing the state’s Turnpike Authority to pump water from its Big Dig tunnels into a wastewater treatment plant. The Turnpike Authority is pumping more than 1 million gallons of water a month from the tunnels, according to the Boston Globe. The water comes from several different sources including leaks that the Transit Authority says it’s repairing. In a letter to the Transit Authority the MWRA said that the current permit was primarily for water used to wash the tunnel walls but pumping all types of water into the treatment plant changed the nature of the permit.
