Small cities saw the most increase in violent crime last year. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s preliminary version of the Uniform Crime Report for 2005 showed a 12.5 percent increase in crimes like murder and aggravated assault in cities with populations between 50,000 and 249,000 people, according to The New York Times. Experts say the increase may be due to the spread of gangs into smaller cities and a decrease in federal funding for local police agencies. Others say the rise might just be a one-year “bump,” not a trend.
