New Communications Era Starts

The Secaucus, N.J., Police Department has obtained a $50,000 federal grant to help pay the $250,000 cost of installing a new digital dispatching system

The Secaucus, N.J., Police Department has obtained a $50,000 federal grant to help pay the $250,000 cost of installing a new digital dispatching system to handle emergency calls, including those for fire and ambulance services. The new system can be used by county, state, and federal agencies.

Police Chief Dennis Corcoran is pessimistic that the state will agree to his request to fund the remainder of the system’s cost. The town will foot the cost if the request for state funding is denied.

The system allows dispatchers to handle emergency calls via three workstations. The technology also ties in computers, radio, and phone lines. Corcoran is optimistic that the system could begin taking calls within the next two years.
