A compromise measure to close a loophole in the state’s use of gas tax money will be the first thing California voters will see on their ballot when they vote in November. An alliance of construction companies, engineers and unionized contractors lobbied for the measure that will limit the state’s use of the money, which is supposed to go to transportation projects, for other purposes, according to the Los Angeles Times. Lawmakers have used the loophole to divert $2.5 billion to school operations, healthcare and other expenses. The new measure is part of a $116-billion public works package. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-bond9may09,0,6893874.story?coll=la-home-local
