In a 217 to 215 vote, the House approved a five-year budget plan that would save the government nearly $50 billion by cutting funding to programs for the poor, college students and farmers. According to the Washington Post, the House plan must now be reconciled with that of the Senate, which saves $35 billion over five years and still includes a provision allowing oil firms into Alaska’s Arctic refuge.
