San Luis Obispo County, Calif., employees moved into their new $26 million government home in August. The 160,000-square-foot complex was designed to save energy and boost employee productivity, and includes strategically placed windows and glass walls, light screens and horizontal light shelves to allow sunlight in while shading out the sun’s heat. Automatic light switches turn off lights during the day, and a raised floor system absorbs cool night air, reducing the need for air conditioning. Designed by San Francisco-based Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz Architects, the facility complements a nearby historic art-deco theater, a neighboring one-story restaurant and low-rise, Mission-style buildings.
