EXTRA, EXTRA/Fueling cigarette litter reduction effort
Cigarette butts, packaging and lighting materials represent more than 20 percent of the litter collected in many communities, according to Stamford, Conn.-based Keep America Beautiful (KAB). To help communities launch cigarette litter reduction initiatives, the nonprofit organization has produced the “Guide to Cigarette Litter Prevention” CD-ROM with support from Richmond, Va.-based Philip Morris USA. The free CD-ROM describes a multi-dimensional approach communities can use to develop prevention programs, including public education and communication, local ordinances, enforcement initiatives and reward/recognition programs. The recommendations were tested in more than one dozen large and small communities over the past three years and helped reduce cigarette litter by an average of 46 percent, according to KAB.
