EXTRA, EXTRA/Volunteers assist fire departments
The Bernalillo County, N.M., Fire & Rescue Department and the Johnson County, Ark., Rescue and Fire Department #1 Company are two of the first 250 fire departments to participate in the Fire Corps, a new division of the Department of Homeland Security Citizen Corps program. The Fire Corps, which launched in 2004, recruits residents to fill non-operational roles to support paid and volunteer firefighters. As members of the Fire Corps, Johnson County residents have helped with safety programming, stuffed goodie bags for children and run the fire department’s two robots, Freddie and Pluggie, a fire truck and fire hydrant used in the department’s safety program. Bernalillo County residents have assisted with public education programs, firefighter rehabilitation and administrative work. More information about Fire Corps is available at www.firecorps.org.
