Hand-held computer assists parking-enforcement officers who issue tickets
TicketManager consists of an electronic data-capture system that includes a weather-resistant, hand-held computer; portable printer for issuing on-site citations; and software that connects with a central database server. Operates via wireless, cellular networks to provide instant communication in real time. By entering a vehicles license-plate number into the hand-held computer, enforcement officer can receive fast, online verification about the vehicle and driver, such as previous violations, abusive behavior, and whether or not vehicle is stolen. Computer features drop-down menus and automatically fills in repetitive information to expedite data entry. Through a wireless link, the computer communicates with thermal printer to produce an on-the-spot, clearly printed ticket for parking violations. The system improves officer safety, increases detection of repeat violators, streamlines communications, and eliminates the need for clerical workers to transcribe written tickets. In addition, traffic officers can use the computer to automatically send a request to towing companies or for additional police assistance. Besides issuing parking citations, the system is ideal for enforcing municipal bylaws in cities, towns, and school districts. Serves officers who ticket jaywalkers, enforce speed limits, investigate citizens who are disturbing the peace, maintain security on transit buses, or perform other public-safety duties.
