Yorktown Swing
This week’s winner was taken by Mary Boynton, graphics design specialist for York County, Va. Taken in September 2004, the photo shows the George P. Coleman Bridge crossing the York River from Yorktown to Gloucester. Originally built in 1955, the bridge was reconstructed in 1995 as the United States’ largest double-swing span bridge and the second largest in the world. It opens in the middle to allow U.S. Navy ships to travel through to the Naval Weapons Station. The bridge is 3,750 feet long and carries 50,000 vehicles daily.
