The nocturnal coqui frog hitched a ride to Hawaii from Puerto Rico on tropical plants in 1990. At night, the frogs, which have infested 150 communities on the Big Island scream in a high-pitched chirp. According to CNN, Honolulu Mayor Harry Kim is asking the state’s governor to declare the area a state of emergency and to fork over $2 million to begin ridding the island of the coin-sized hoppers.
