Dallas-Fort Worth hopes to reduce ozone problems
Driving in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area is something residents love to do, but the pollution that is emitted on the Metroplex freeways by cars and trucks has become the single largest contributor to the region’s severe ozone problem. The North Central Texas Council of Governments will use $1.5 million in grants to work with the state insurance commissioner to persuade insurance providers to offer lower premiums to motorists who drive less. A pilot program is expected to begin next year, and if it is successful, the Metroplex would become a national model for cleaning ground-level ozone. Although there are many obstacles to making such a plan work, such as how to track mileage and how to adjust costs accordingly, regional planners say that the idea merits more research because the region cannot comply with ozone standards without reducing tailpipe pollution. http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/local/9534562.htm
