Killington, Vt., residents approve plan to join New Hampshire
Residents of Killington, Vt., have voted to endorse a plan to secede from Vermont and join New Hampshire, located more than 20 miles from the town, according to The Associated Press (AP). “The overwhelming vote opened the next chapter in what could be a long and costly push to join New Hampshire…,” the AP reports. “Ultimately, the vote could prove to be only symbolic. State lawmakers in New Hampshire and Vermont will have the final say. And Vermont legislators said secession will probably be voted down.” Killington officials and residents are frustrated with the amount of municipal and education aid the town receives from Vermont, compared with the amount of taxes the ski-resort sends to the state.
