Cambridge, Mass.-based Cambridge Systematics has released a study that says there were 233 major traffic bottlenecks in the United States in 2002, a rise from 167 bottlenecks in 1997. The study, commissioned by the Washington, D.C.-based American Highway Users Alliance (AHUA), also ranks the 24 worst bottlenecks in the nation, based on annual hours of combined driver delays. The Los Angeles metropolitan area contains five of the worst 24 traffic chokepoints. AHUA will use the study to lobby for funds to fix the traffic chokepoints in the reauthorized federal highway bill. For more information, visit
