Atlanta police unhappy with pay, pensions
Atlanta police are unhappy, and they want everyone to know it. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), a police union has put up some billboards in the city that feature the message, “Welcome to Atlanta: Protected by some of the lowest-paid police officers in the country.” Union officials met with Atlanta’s mayor and police chief on Thursday to lobby for higher pay and/or better pensions, the paper says. However, union representatives told the AJC that little progress was made during the meeting and that police unions plan to lobby City Council members, who will vote on the city’s next budget this month. “Two police unions — the International Brotherhood of Police Officers and the Police Benevolent Association — say Atlanta loses 100 officers a year through attrition, with many younger officers hopping to better-paying metro area departments or heading on to other cities,” the AJC reports.
