The Leon County, Fla., Board of County Commissioners adopted a $100,000 grant program in November that provides financial assistance to families of military personnel who are called to active duty. The grant program is the first of its kind in the country. Leon County residents can apply for the grants to pay their ad valorem property taxes or rent. To receive the grants, residents must submit documents that identify the duration of their absences. Qualified property owners can receive $600 or a prorated amount of their ad valorem tax bill, whichever is greater. Active military personnel who do not own property can receive $600 grants.
