The Chesapeake Innovation Center (CIC), headquartered in Annapolis, Md., near the hub of Homeland security activity, is 80 percent leased with early-stage business ventures offering Homeland security technology solutions.

A program of the Anne Arundel County, Md., Economic Development Corp., the CIC claims to be “the first incubator in the nation specializing in the development of Homeland security technology companies.

“This center represents our commitment to helping entrepreneurs achieve success,” says Janet S. Owens, an Anne Arundel County official. The CIC has established partnerships with federal agencies, universities and key corporations to facilitate entry of emerging companies into the Homeland security and information technology industries.

The client companies of the CIC include:

  • Global Wireless Network Inc., designer and manufacturer of wireless hardware devices related to communications interoperability.

  • ICUC, a communications services company that integrates telephone numbers with various Internet services.

  • Lighthouse Communications LLC, a location-based services and wireless communication company that delivers safety, security and information to the mobile environment.

  • PharmAthene Inc., a developer of human therapeutics and vaccines to treat and prevent diseases associated with biological warfare threats.

  • Realinterface Expert Systems, which provides wireless diagnostic and surveillance tools to first responders.

  • Real User Corp., provider of Passface authentication technology for reinforcing or replacing passwords.

  • Secured Processing Inc., a security and information assurance company with technology to defend against insider threats on personal computers and workstations.

Each CIC applicant company follows a four-step application process to scrutinize business potential, technical merit, commercial viability, quality of the management team and potential economic impact to the region.

The CIC Advisory Committee, a 21-member body comprised of business and government experts, reviews and advises nominated applicants for admission.

Client companies receive value-added services based on a model of incubation that increases their likelihood of success. They have access to a network of investor resources and industry and business expertise, in addition to the CIC Partners. For information, visit http://www.cic-tech.org or call (410) 224-2030.

Appalachia is underwater—at least 30 people have died in historic flooding that’s brought Kentucky to its knees for the second time in two years, following the devastating tornado that cut across the state in December. Severe weather is continuing to hit the region even as the death toll rises. “If things weren’t hard enough on […]

Key considerations for local governments seeking compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
