A dispute over budget cuts led a Fulton County, Ga., judge to close the county’s magistrate courts on Wednesday. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), county officials recently asked State Court Chief Judge Albert Thompson to cut his budget by 5 percent. The request angered Thompson, who has lobbied for budget increases to hire more people, and he decided to close magistrate courts in protest. The move shocked county officials. “I don’t know how to react,” Commissioner Robb Pitts told the AJC. “I don’t know what it means.” It is not clear whether Thompson will re-open the courts today.
